What is the Technical Intern Training Program (TITP)?
The Technical Intern Training Program is a system that allows foreign nationals to work at Japanese companies while learning occupational skills and techniques. Through hands-on work experience, trainees acquire practical skills and are expected to contribute to the development of industries in their home countries after returning. The maximum period of stay is generally up to 3 years, and up to 5 years in some cases.
What is the Specified Skilled Worker (SSW) visa?
The Specified Skilled Worker visa is a residence status for foreign workers who are expected to work in Japan as immediate contributors.
There are two categories:
- SSW Type 1: Up to 5 years of stay
- SSW Type 2: Renewable status with eligibility for family accompaniment in certain occupations
Applicants must pass specific skill tests and meet Japanese language requirements.
What kinds of jobs are available?
Technical Intern Training: Manufacturing, construction, agriculture, fisheries, nursing care, food processing, and many other fields
Specified Skilled Worker: Nursing care, building cleaning, manufacturing, construction, hospitality, food service, agriculture, fisheries, food processing, etc.
(Each field has its own tests and requirements.)
What are the eligibility requirements?
General requirements include:
- Being 18 years old or older (may vary by occupation)
- Being in good health
- Having no criminal record
The Technical Intern Training Program is generally for those who are coming to Japan for the first time.
For the Specified Skilled Worker visa, passing required tests and meeting Japanese language standards are necessary.
How much Japanese language ability is required?
Technical Intern Training: Daily conversational Japanese is helpful for work and daily life. Basic Japanese is taught during pre-departure training.
SSW Type 1: Many occupations require Japanese proficiency equivalent to JLPT N4 or passing occupation-specific language tests.
SSW Type 2: Higher technical skills and Japanese proficiency are expected.
Are there any tests or training programs?
Yes.
Specified Skilled Workers must pass skill tests and Japanese language tests such as JFT-Basic or the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT).
Technical Intern Trainees receive Japanese language and skills training before departure and after arrival in Japan.
What is the process for obtaining a visa?
- Apply for a job
- Acceptance by a host company
- Pass required tests and training
- Application for Certificate of Eligibility by the host company or supervising organization
- Visa application at a Japanese embassy or consulate
- Entry into Japan
Since procedures involve many documents and time, early preparation is strongly recommended.
What about salary and working conditions?
Japanese labor laws, including the Minimum Wage Act and Labor Standards Act, apply.
Wages vary by industry and region, but working hours, overtime, and holidays are based on Japanese law and employment contracts.
Please be sure to check conditions for each job offer.
Is housing and daily life support provided?
Companies and supervising organizations generally support:
- Housing arrangements
- Daily life orientation
- Assistance with bank accounts and insurance enrollment
Support details vary by employer, so please confirm in advance.
Can I bring my family with me?
- Technical Intern Training: Family accompaniment is generally not permitted (with rare exceptions).
- SSW Type 1: Family accompaniment is generally not allowed.
- SSW Type 2: Family accompaniment is permitted for certain occupations.
What happens after the contract period ends?
- Technical Intern Training: Returning home is the basic principle, but under certain conditions, changing to another residence status (such as SSW) may be possible.
- Specified Skilled Worker: Type 1 is limited to 5 years, while Type 2 allows renewal and family accompaniment in some cases. Returning home is also an option.
Health checkups and insurance
Workers in Japan are generally required to undergo health checkups and enroll in medical insurance and pension systems.
Vaccinations or medical examinations may be required before and after arrival.
How much does the application cost?
Costs vary depending on the employer and supervising organization.
Expenses may include visa application fees, training costs, travel expenses, and intermediary fees.
Please feel free to contact us for details.
How long does it take from application to arrival in Japan?
It usually takes several months, including document preparation, tests, and issuance of the Certificate of Eligibility.
In some cases, it may take six months or longer, so early preparation is important.
Are there cultural or etiquette points to be aware of in Japan?
Punctuality, cleanliness, workplace hierarchy, and clear communication (reporting, contacting, and consulting – “Ho-Ren-So”) are highly valued.
Daily life rules such as garbage separation may also be strict in some areas.
We will, of course, provide full support.
What are the specific steps to apply from India?
- Check occupations of interest
- Apply for a position
- Pre-screening and interviews (online or local)
- Take required tests and training
- Prepare documents and apply for a visa
